#SpeakUpSMP Participation

Participating in the St. Martin’s Press boycott can be as simple as no longer promoting books from St. Martin’s Press or related imprints on your social media, websites, and review spaces. Participants are asked to withhold ALL reviews of these books until demands are met, including on Goodreads, Storygraph and NetGalley. Additionally, we are asking that participants avoid promoting these books in any way during this time. This includes master lists, reading recaps, and other similar posts. However, readers can still purchase and read these books in order to reduce harm done to the authors.

Participants are encouraged to share posts about the boycott, make their own posts, and utilize the templates and graphics we have provided you to keep the momentum going.

What about readers abroad?

Participation for influencers outside of the United States.

Influencer Best Practices

  • Utilize the graphics provided to you to hide the book cover when sharing content such as hauls, book mail, round ups, etc. It is best to cover the entire book!
  • Don’t answer comments asking what book it is! Simply let the commentor know you will share that information once St. Martin’s Press meets the demands of the boycott.
  • Use the hashtag #SpeakUpSMP when sharing these posts or other content relating to the boycott.
  • Utilize the graphic below when spreading awareness about the boycott! Refer the user to the Readers for Accountability account to learn more information.
  • Put a stop to disinformation by providing corrections and pointing other users to our website to learn the facts about the boycott.

Company/Industry Participation

Book Stores

When possible, choose non-SMP titles for display and make an effort to exclude SMP books from your personal recommendations. If allowed, avoid posting about boycotted titles on social media. If possible, please place a flyer in your store front or breakroom.

Book Box Companies

When possible, postpone releases/announcements regarding titles under the boycotted publishers. If able to, it is also helpful to refuse/postpone contracts with these publishers as well. If unable to meet these requirements due to established contracts, opt-in to redacting covers and titles in solidarity.

Authors

We are asking authors to support us online by sharing our graphics and reposting our content. If you are an author with suggestions on how you feel safest participating, please email us at contactr4a@gmail.com.

Podcast Participation

We are asking that all titles under the boycott be withheld from features on podcasts of all formats. Our suggestion is to redact the title and author and inform your audience that you will reveal both once St. Martin’s Press meets the demands.

Industry Professionals

We understand that your job may not allow you to participate in full. As such, please see the list below for ways in which you may offer your support. If you are an industry professional that has suggestions on ways you’re willing to participate, please contact us at contactr4a@gmail.com.
